Race Day
Prepare for your first race and beyond
Featured Tips
Nothing New on Race Day
Don't try new shoes, clothes, food, or pacing strategies on race day. Use exactly what you've trained with. Race day nerves affect digestion, so stick to familiar pre-race meals.
Start Slower Than You Think
The biggest race day mistake is starting too fast. The excitement and crowds push you to go out hard, then you crash later. Aim to run your first mile slower than target pace.
All Tips
Arrive Early and Stay Calm
Get to the race venue at least an hour early. Find the toilets, drop your bag, do a short warm-up jog. Being rushed increases stress and wastes energy you need for running.
Trust Your Training
Race day isn't the time to doubt yourself. You've done the training - the hay is in the barn. Focus on executing your race plan, not worrying about the result.
Know the Course
Study the course map and elevation profile beforehand. Know where the hills are, where the aid stations are, and where the finish is. Mental preparation prevents surprises.
